More About Social Networks: Augmented Social Networks

Posted by Siny George on July 17th, 2007

There exists a myriad of online communities - both commercial and non – profit with little or no interoperability with one another.  One of the ideas suggested to help resolve this issue is to develop an Augmented Social Network. Augmented Social Network is a model that would build identity and trust into the architecture of the Internet, in order to facilitate the interoperability of social networks. The Augmented Social Network (ASN) was first proposed in June 2003 in a paper presented at the PlaNetwork Conference.

One of the core elements of an Augmented Social Network is a form of digital identity that supports introductions between people who share affinities through recommendations of trusted third parties. The paper claims that the adoption of this model will enhance the capability of Social Networks to create and share knowledge.
