Using ReThink Compliance

Posted by Michael Brown on August 10th, 2007

As we wind down in our development cycle for the ReThink Compliance Tool, I thought I might take a few moments to provide some quick insight on how the tool is used.

There are two types of compliance activities that the tool performs. These activities are reporting compliance and shipping compliance.

Reporting Compliance
Most states have reporting requirements for direct to consumer shipping. These states require reports be printed and sent to them in regular intervals. The ReThink Compliance Tool handles reporting compliance in the following way.

1) Upload Order Data
Orders can be input into the system either by uploading a CSV file or by integrating your system with the compliance tool via web service interface. Product catalog data can optionally be uploaded as well depending on how much data is present in the orders and whether or not bundles are used.

2) Go To MyReports
MyReports is a feature where the compliance tool evaluates the ship-to state of all input orders and determines which reports are needed. These are considered Pending reports. This allows you to quickly see which reports are required with out any guess work.

3) Display Report
When a pending report is selected, the system generates a PDF filling in all report fields. For fields which are not present in the order data, we have a  supplementary data screen which allows you to type in additional info needed for the report. This supplementary data screen is saved and therefore made available each time the report is run.

4) Print Report
Since the report is rendered as a PDF it can be printed using the print functionality in Adobe Acrobat.

5) Send Report
Once the report is sent, you can check the ‘sent’ check box next to the report. This indicates to the system that the report has been sent and removes it from the pending state.

Shipping Compliance
Shipping compliance consists of checking the orders to ensure they adhere to the ship-to state’s direct to consumer shipping laws. The ReThink system takes each order entered and evaluates it against the DTC rule base. This checks the order to see if it is in compliance with on-site, off-site, prohibition and volume laws. In addition they system will indicate when license/ permits are required for shipping. For orders which are non-compliant, the order can be changed and then re-uploaded into the system.
